How to store and charge your tool batteries — DeWalt, Milwaukee, and Ridgid

Comment ranger et recharger ses batteries d'outils — DeWalt, Milwaukee et Ridgid

If you use cordless tools from DeWalt, Milwaukee, or Ridgid, you know the problem: batteries pile up on the workbench, chargers are scattered everywhere, and you spend time looking for a charged battery instead of working.

Here's how to organize it all efficiently.

Why proper battery storage is important

A poorly stored Li-Ion battery discharges faster and deteriorates prematurely. Heat, humidity, and repeated shocks reduce its lifespan. A dedicated wall-mounted storage solution:

  • Protects batteries from drops and humidity
  • Keeps chargers accessible and permanently plugged in
  • Frees up workbench space
  • Allows you to see at a glance which batteries are charged

The most practical option: the wall-mounted station

A wall-mounted charging station groups your batteries and chargers in one fixed location. You plug it in once, and your batteries are always in the same place, always charged.

This is particularly useful if you work with several batteries in rotation — which is the case for most Milwaukee M18, DeWalt 20V MAX, or Ridgid 18V users.

What to look for in a wall-mounted station:

  • Compatibility with your existing chargers (hole spacing)
  • Solid material — wood is preferable to plastic for workshop durability
  • Simple wall mounting with included hardware
  • Size appropriate for the number of batteries you own (8, 10, or 12 slots)

Milwaukee, DeWalt, or Ridgid: does it make a difference?

Chargers from these three brands have slightly different dimensions, but most wooden wall stations with ½-inch spacing fit all three. The important thing is that the holes are close enough to secure the chargers without play.

If you mix brands in your workshop, a station with holes every ½ inch gives you the necessary flexibility.

Other storage tips

Do not store completely discharged batteries. A charge between 30% and 60% is ideal for long-term storage (winter, job site break).

Avoid extreme temperatures. An unheated garage in winter can damage cells. Store your batteries indoors if temperatures drop below -10°C.

Label your batteries. If you have several of the same size, a simple colored tape allows you to identify older ones and use them first.

In summary

The best storage for your batteries is the one you will actually use. A wooden wall-mounted station, located near your workstation, with your chargers already plugged in, is the simplest and most durable solution.

Créations AVLR manufactures wall-mounted charging stations from Baltic birch plywood, made in Quebec, available in 8, 10, or 12-battery formats.
