Organize Your Workshop in One Weekend — Where to Begin?

The garage workshop is where great projects come to life. But when the space is disorganized — tools nowhere to be found, cables scattered, cluttered workbench — every project starts with the frustration of searching for what you need. A well-planned weekend can completely change that. Here's the method to transform your workshop from chaos to clarity.

Friday Evening: Assess and Plan

Start by taking inventory of your tools and your space. Which tools do you really use every week? Which ones do you use twice a year? This distinction will determine their placement: frequent tools within reach, others stored but accessible. Also measure your available wall space and identify mounting areas (wood studs in walls, ceiling joists).

Draw a simple plan of your ideal workshop. No need to be an architect: a few rectangles on a piece of paper are enough. Where do you want the workbench? Where will wall-mounted tools go? Where will you install the battery charging station? This plan will guide all your weekend decisions.

Saturday Morning: Empty and Sort

Take everything out of the workshop. Yes, everything. Place tools on work tables or on the garage floor. Sort into three categories: keep, donate, discard. Take this opportunity to inspect the condition of your tools: dull saw blades, broken levels, drills with dead batteries. Now is a good time to make a realistic shopping list.

Also clean the space itself: sweep the floor, wipe down existing shelves, check the condition of electrical outlets. A clean workshop is more pleasant to work in and easier to organize.

Saturday Afternoon: Install Wall Mounts

This is the central part of the project. AVLR Creations' wooden wall mounts install with standard screws into your wall studs. Solid wood is beautiful, sturdy, and protects your tools better than plastic. Start by installing mounts for heavier tools (drills, grinders), then hooks for lighter tools.

Also plan a dedicated area for power tool batteries. A wall-mounted charging station for your DeWalt, Milwaukee, or Ridgid batteries keeps them charged, organized, and out of reach of children. Charging cables can be neatly grouped along the wall.

Sunday: Finishing Touches and Real-World Test

On Sunday morning, put each tool back in its designated place. Do a full-scale test: try doing a simple task in the workshop. Is everything easily accessible? Are there any frictions? Adjust positions if necessary — now is the easy time, before it becomes a habit.

At the end of the day, take that picture you're proud of. Share it. And start planning your first real project in this deserving workshop.
