Storing Your Bike for Back-to-School — Solutions for Apartments and Houses

August is winding down, bike rides are becoming less frequent, and the storage question comes up again. Whether you live in a city apartment or a house with a garage, properly storing your bike as back-to-school approaches means giving it a long life and keeping your living space pleasant. Because a bike blocking the hallway always ends up annoying everyone.

In an Apartment: Using Walls Without Causing Damage

In an apartment, space is precious and every square metre counts. A bike on the floor easily takes up 1.5 m² — equivalent to a small desk. The smartest solution: hang it on the wall with a horizontal wall mount. Your bike becomes almost a decorative object, visible but unobtrusive, and frees up the entire floor space.

Créations AVLR wood wall mounts are installed into the wood studs behind the drywall with standard screws. They leave just two small holes in the wall — far less than most people fear. And if you ever move out, the landlord will only see two small marks that are easily filled.

In a House: Optimizing the Garage or Basement

In a house, the garage or basement offers more flexibility. But precisely because there's more space, we tend to leave bikes lying on the floor, wedged between the lawnmower and moving boxes. Take advantage of back-to-school to change that habit.

Install wood wall mounts on the side wall of the garage and hang your bikes. For a family of four, you can store four bikes on 2.5 metres of wall and reclaim all the central garage space for your car or projects. It's a two-hour investment that changes the dynamic of the entire space.

Vertical or Horizontal: Which Type of Mount to Choose?

The horizontal mount is the most popular: the bike hangs by the front wheel or frame, perpendicular to the wall. It's the most accessible and easiest to use daily. It suits most bike types and installs at arm height.

The vertical mount is ideal for very narrow spaces or hallways. The bike stands upright with the front wheel raised against the wall. It takes up less width but requires a bit more height. For heavy bikes (e-MTB, cargo bike), make sure the mount is secured to solid studs.

End-of-Season Maintenance Before Storing

Before hanging your bike for the coming weeks, take fifteen minutes for a quick tune-up. Clean the frame and wheels, lubricate the chain, check tire pressure. A bike that sits for several weeks should be stored with tires slightly inflated to prevent deformation.

This small time investment now will let you take out your bike in October for a last fall ride — or next April — without needing emergency repairs.
