Storing Your Bike for Back-to-School — Solutions for Apartments and Houses

August is drawing to a close, bike rides are becoming less frequent, and the question of storage arises once again. Whether you live in a city apartment or a house with a garage, properly storing your bike as the back-to-school season approaches ensures its longevity and guarantees you a pleasant living space. Because a bike left in the hallway always ends up annoying everyone.

In an Apartment: Using Walls Without Damage

In an apartment, space is precious and every square foot counts. A bike placed on the floor easily occupies 1.5 m² — the equivalent of a small desk. The smartest solution: hang it on the wall with a horizontal wall mount. Your bike almost becomes a decorative object, visible but discreet, and completely frees up floor space.

Creations AVLR wooden wall mounts are installed into the wood studs behind the drywall with standard screws. They leave only two small holes in the wall — far fewer than most people fear. And if you ever leave the apartment, the landlord will only see two small, easily patched marks.

In a House: Optimizing the Garage or Basement

In a house, the garage or basement offers more flexibility. But precisely because there's more space, we tend to leave bikes lying on the floor, between the lawnmower and moving boxes. Take advantage of back-to-school to change this habit.

Install wooden wall mounts on the side wall of the garage and hang your bikes. For a family of four, you can store four bikes on 2.5 meters of wall and reclaim all the space in the center of the garage for your car or projects. It's a two-hour investment that changes the dynamic of the entire space.

Vertical or Horizontal: Which Type of Mount to Choose?

The horizontal mount is the most popular: the bike is hung by the front wheel or frame, perpendicular to the wall. It's the most accessible and easiest to use daily. It suits most bike types and is installed at arm height.

The vertical mount is ideal for very narrow spaces or hallways. The bike is stored upright, with the front wheel raised against the wall. It takes up less width but requires a bit more height. For heavy bikes (electric mountain bikes, cargo bikes), make sure the mount is secured into solid studs.

End-of-Season Maintenance Before Storing

Before hanging up your bike for the coming weeks, take fifteen minutes for quick maintenance. Clean the frame and wheels, lubricate the chain, and check tire pressure. A bike that goes several weeks without being ridden should be stored with slightly inflated tires to avoid deformation.

This small investment of time now will allow you to take out your bike in October for a last autumn ride or next April without having to make emergency repairs.
